Cocktail sausages, also known as cocktail frankfurters or just “cocktails” for short, are a type of sausage that is commonly served as a snack or appetizer. They are typically made from pork and seasoned with a blend of spices, herbs, and sometimes other ingredients like breadcrumbs or onions.
The sausages are usually small, about 3-4 inches (7-10 cm) long, and are often served on skewers or sticks, grilled or fried until golden brown. They are typically served with a dipping sauce, such as tomato ketchup or a tangy condiment like malt vinegar and English mustard.
Cocktail sausages are often served at social gatherings, parties, and outdoor events, such as picnics, barbecues, and sporting events. They are often accompanied by other savory treats like crisps (chips), nuts, and cheese and crackers.
The origins of the name “cocktail” sausage are unclear, but it’s thought to have been coined because of the way the sausages were served in small clusters on skewers, similar to a cocktail party.
